While surfing the internet the other day, I came across some rather bizarre, surreal and even disturbing videos of classic TV commercials, especially this one of Wilma and Fred Fintstone smoking as well as a very evil-looking Jolly Green Giant.
Check out my online article of classic TV commercials here.

Posted in Weird & Absurd, tagged NaBloPoMo09 on October 15, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
You know that it’s got to be a slow news day in Korea, or maybe not depending on how big a fan one is of pop Diva Mariah Carey, when one of the top news stories of the day, according to the Korea Times is about her lip synching.
Talk about lip service, huh?
The article reported [...]

And in the WTF department here in Korea, it was reported today in the Korea Times (which seems to be printing more and more weird and absurd news snippets) that a 48-year-old woman, identified as a Kim, alleges she sustained a head injury after being hit by a rock thrown by an elephant.
What?
According to the [...]

Or caps to screw back on?
No, I’m not in a bad mood today, though this middle-aged female Korean shopper at Homeplus this afternoon who pushed me aside while I was about to pay for my meager groceries to have the clerk discount her purchase with a coupon she just happened to find pushed me pretty [...]

It’s probably true that most kids at one time or another have either thought about or tried shoplifting to see if one could get away with it.
I know I did back in the 1960s when I tried to “lift” some red hot dollars by shoving them into my back pocket and paying for some other [...]
Stealing a kiss? How about hypnotizing for one?

A modern-day Svengali, in this case, a 32-year-old Korean man, was fined for attempting to hypnotize a woman and then kiss her.
According to the Seoul Central District Court last week, Mr. Park (very rarely in Korean newspapers do they give the full name; unless it is a foreigner) an employee (supposedly a hypnotist according to [...]
Panty Raids in Korea
Posted in News, South Korea, Weird & Absurd, tagged Korean Stuff, NaBloPoMo09, South Korea on August 6, 2009 | 1 Comment »
In all the years that I have lived in Korea I have come across stories about men stealing women’s underwear for various proclivities—perverted or not—from clotheslines, laundry racks and rooms, but never an all-out panty raid. And not like the one reported in the Korea Times this week:
Conflicts are deepening between female and male students [...]

The Stalinist country that you have come to fear the most with the saber rattling and nuclear threats has recently opened their first fast food restaurant in Pyongyang according to Tokyo-based Choson Sinbo, a pro-North Korean newspaper.
“The Samtaesong restaurant opened last month in a joint venture with a Singaporean company, which trained restaurant staff and [...]

If the shortest distance between two points is not always a straight line, then how I ended up teaching English in Korea started off with an interview for a teaching position in Indonesia.
It also helped that I had in the words of an interviewer, “the All-American look.”
In the summer of 1990 I had just finished [...]
Giant hot dog crashes into house

Well, not exactly a giant hot dog, but the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile.
I wonder what the occupants of the house thought—if they were at home at the time of the crash—when they saw the Weinermobile coming through the wall? They must have been really freaked out.
As for the driver, I wonder if he was hot dogging [...]
